課程概述

Population health and health care system of a nation are increasingly affected by the processes of globalization. This introductory course is aimed to provide an overview of the emerging field of global health. Thru lectures and discussion sessions we will introduce the principles and goals of global health, measurement tools for global health research, and the contemporary development of global health. Invited speakers will address global health theories and practices on a range of topics, such as health care delivery systems, control of communicable and non-communicable diseases, occupational health, environmental health, and the rising influences of global trade policies on health and health inequalities. This course is designed for undergraduate students majoring in global health and students in other departments who may or may not have previous exposure to public health sciences. Each session runs for 3 hours, starting with a one-hour lecture and followed by small-group discussions led by TA, and ending with a final plenary discussion involving the instructor and the whole class. For some weeks, hands-on sessions are designed for the second and the third hour, including experiments in environmental and occupational health, aging experiences, debate and interactions with lecturers from NGOs.

課程目標
Students will obtain knowledge on public health sciences with a global perspective.
課程要求
Students are expected to:
1) read assigned readings and submit a short essay (within 1 A4 page) prior to each class (only if announced for that week);
2) actively participate in small group discussions and the plenary discussion;
3) work with classmates as a team for final project.

**Assignment Rules**
(1) Assignments must be submitted online prior to the lecture on Monday.
(2) Late homework is acceptable if submitted before Monday night (23:59), but the grade will be one level downgraded. The highest grade of the late assignment is "A" (i.e. downgraded from the original highest possible grade A+).
(3) After Monday night, the assignment of that week will not be accepted.
(4) Students can check their grades of weekly assignments on CEIBA.
(5) 6 assignments with best grades will be included in calculation of the final grade.

**Grading of Participation**
(1) Being absent without a good reason will lead to a loss of one point out of your participation grade.
(2) Students are expected to actively participate in the group discussion, asking or answering questions during class; being the presenter in the plenary discussion will give you a bonus grade.

**Final Project**
Students should work in groups of 4-8 people writing a proposal aimed at solving a specific global health challenge. The proposal needs to be structured with the following parts: abstract, statement of the problem, and description of solution.

Timeline for the final project:
Each group is required to submit an outline (2 A4 pages) of the final project on Week 8. The outline should include the details of the project topic. Each group is required to submit a revised outline of the final project on Week 12. The outline should include the details of the project topic as well as some preliminary thoughts regarding the solutions.

The presentation PowerPoint should be uploaded on CEIBA at least one day before the final presentation (i.e. before 23.59 Sunday).
